My Abbey Road: Christopher Parker

My Abbey Road: Christopher Parker

9th November 2022

Next up in our My Abbey Road engineer series is assistant engineer Christopher Parker.

Christopher joined us from Angel Studios where he worked on such projects as a live-to-vinyl session with Nile Rodgers and TV & film scores like Downton Abbey and Spotlight.

At Abbey Road, he has worked on many recent scores including Alan Silvestri’s Pinocchio, Michael Giacchino’s Thor: Love & Thunder and Bear McCreary’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and artist projects including Joe Bonamassa’s Royal Tea and Metronomy’s The Abbey Road Sessions.

Read on to learn what Abbey Road means to him.

What does Abbey Road mean to you?

"To me, working at Abbey Road is the culmination of a dream.

As an adolescent, I realised that most of the music I loved most had one thing in common: Abbey Road.

Then when I fell in love with recording, I knew I wanted to do it in one place and one place only."

What are some of the most memorable projects you’ve worked on and why?

"One of my most memorable projects was engineering the recording of Joe Bonamassa’s Royal Tea album in Studio One with his band and the incredible producer Kevin Shirley.

Meeting one of your heroes is one thing, working with them another. And for that record to be nominated for a Grammy was beyond my wildest dreams.

Also working on the score to the popular EA Games series, Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. We did part one a few years ago and have just finished the scoring process for the sequel. They are a massive undertaking, containing over seven hours of bespoke music per game. To be able to be involved in the whole process across many months and multiple blocks of recording is something I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to do.

The whole team are just fantastic to work with; Gordy Haab & Stephen Barton are incredibly talented and a joy to be around. Alan Meyerson Is a legend in the industry and is as generous and as humble as they come. It’s borderline criminal that I get paid for this!"

What have you learned in your time at Abbey Road?

"Ooof. That’s too difficult to distil into one sentence alone. There’s always something to pick up or a moment to learn from.

It could be someone putting up an extra interesting microphone to AB against the usual choices, or an interesting array or positioning around an instrument. It could be a software shortcut you didn’t know about, or a new macro that you’ve been working on to save time in a high-pressure situation.

We’ll often talk about this stuff amongst ourselves over a beer or two. Every day is a school day."

What do you most enjoy about your role?

"Being part of a team. This partly goes back to the answer to the previous question, but to be part of such a team is wonderful.

I believe we do better when we come together, and never is that more obvious to me than at Abbey Road. The strength and depth across the engineering team is incredible, but they’d be nothing without the unfailing support from the technical team or the runners for instance.

There are so many people that are all tirelessly pulling towards the same goal; it’s a joy to be a part of it."
