My Abbey Road…with Carter Burwell

"I think of Abbey Road as the best studio in the world, it’s as simple as that."

In this week’s My Abbey Road contribution, Oscar-nominated film composer Carter Burwell, who's worked on the likes of Blood Simple, Being John Malkovich and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri shares his favourite memories of working at Abbey Road; from Evelyn Glennie's marimba recording on Wonderstruck to meeting more film composers in the Abbey Road canteen than anywhere else in his life.

Carter’s Abbey Road

I think of Abbey Road as the best studio in the world, it’s as simple as that.  The sound is great, the people are great, the tech is great, the canteen is great.  There is a collegiality due to the various studios all operating at the same time.  I’ve met more film composers in the Abbey Road canteen than anywhere else in my life.

Carter's Favourite Memory?

My favorite memory of Abbey Road is probably from recording WONDERSTRUCK in Studio Two. Evelyn Glennie was recording a fairly complex marimba part.  Anyway, I considered it complex.  Not only was she playing it easily and beautifully (in stocking feet as usual) but was dancing as she did so. She made the piece sing and her freedom and energy were infectious.

Carter's Favorite Recording?

A favorite recording of mine from Abbey Road is the score to LEGEND, but the reason has nothing to do with the music or the studio. The film is about the Kray Brothers, famous British gangsters from the 1960s.   knew that the Krays had been real people, but I was amazed how many of the older players in my ensemble had either played in their clubs or had stories of dealing with them. Even Isobel Griffiths’ husband! (I hope that’s not a secret…)

Take a listen to Carter's latest score to Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth here.
