2022 Rewind with Dan Cole, Matthew Cocker and Oli Morgan

2022 Rewind with Dan Cole, Matthew Cocker and Oli Morgan

2nd January 2023

We asked the Abbey Road team to look back and reflect on what was a particularly poignant year for the studios.

From their favourite projects to work on, most played albums and their tips for which artists will be 2023’s burgeoning names - find out more about Abbey Road's Dan Cole, Matthew Cocker and Oli Morgan in our 2022 Rewind series.

Favourite project you’ve worked on at Abbey Road this year?

Dan Cole

"Studio Three refurb. Hard to put into words. To be with a crew of such talent and tenacity re-working one of the Studio’s crown jewels was a real privilege."

Matthew Cocker

"The Beatles: Revolver 2022 Special Edition. As with all the new releases/remixes of Beatles albums, it’s always a joy to unearth previously unheard out-takes and rehearsals which illuminate the Fab Four’s extraordinary talents and their determination to work hard for what they wanted to create.

I did a lot of the research for the bonus material while the studios were closed during the Covid year, 2020, with Kevin Howlett and Mike Heatley (consultants) joining me via Source-Connect Now, so it was great to see it all come to fruition this year and finally get released."

Oli Morgan

"FKJ's V I N C E N T. Being able to master an incredible album, for an incredibly talented artist, from stems, is the stuff of dreams. To then also be able to master it for Atmos is beyond a dream."

Your favourite album of 2022?

Dan Cole

"FlockFlock. Wonderful collection of experimental jazz from London’s finest."

Matthew Cocker

"As my musical background is classical, my favourite for this year is a release on the Ondine label called Ravel 2, featuring the Basque National Orchestra conducted by Robert Trevino.

Ravel’s mother was Basque and much of his music contains Basque influences, so it’s good to hear such lovely performances by the National Orchestra of that region, who are obviously wonderfully idiomatic."

Oli Morgan

"My favourite album of 2022 was one released in 2018, which in some ways is a silver lining of the way we access music 'these days'. It's called Book of Travelers, by Gabriel Kahane, and is a collection of songs written as a result of talking to strangers during a thirteen-day train journey across the US. Each song serves as a little window into the lives of each of those strangers at a particular moment in time.

Baltimore, Model Trains and Little Love are particular favourites."

Which new artist / band are you most excited about for 2023?

Dan Cole

"Personal Trainer. Stumbled across them at the Hope & Ruin during Great Escape. So much energy. Like a combination of The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem."

Matthew Cocker

"There’s a young French pianist called Tom Carré who should (I think) have a great future. He’s still studying at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris, but he is due to record his first album and successful local tours will hopefully lead to bigger things in the coming years.

Here he is playing Ravel’s (fiendishly difficult) Toccata."

Oli Morgan

"Hannah Grae. She's smart, talented, powerfully authentic, and Welsh. If that's not a recipe for success I don't know what is."
