Best Original Score - Academy Award Nominations 2019

23rd January 2019
With the Academy Awards soon approaching, the nominees have now been announced. We are exceptionally proud that Abbey Road Studios and our engineers have been involved with three of the projects nominated for Best Original Score.

2019 Academy Award for Best Original Score:

Black Panther (Ludwig Göransson)
BlacKkKlansman (Terence Blanchard)
If Beale Street Could Talk (Nicholas Britell)
Isle of Dogs (Alexandre Desplat)
Mary Poppins Returns (Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman)

Highly respected composer Alexandre Desplat won the award last year for his Shape of Water score recorded in Studio One, with the sessions engineered by Peter Cobbin and assisted by Abbey Road’s John Barrett and George Oulton.

This year, Black Panther, composed by Ludwig Göransson, Mary Poppins Returns, composed by Marc Shaiman and Isle of Dogs composed by Alexandre Desplat are nominated for Best Original Score and are all projects worked on at Abbey Road or by our engineers.

The score for Black Panther was recorded entirely in Studio One, featuring a 132-piece orchestra, 40-person choir and traditional African percussionists. The sessions were assisted by John Barrett, George Oulton and Alice Bennett.

Mary Poppins Returns was part-recorded in Studio One and mixed in the Penthouse by Abbey Road’s Andrew Dudman, assisted by Alice Bennett and mastered by Miles Showell. Isle of Dogs, also up for the award, was recorded and mixed by our own Simon Rhodes.

The 91st Academy Awards will be held on 24 February 2019.
