The
Hot Mods collaboration - as the band nicknamed themselves - came about when the London five-piece invited the Nottingham duo down to take part in one of our
Lock-In Sessions. Inviting talents to come together to create something new within the studios.
Lead track Nom Nom Nom blends both acts best characteristics, to create a suave yet edgy groove that is as happy on the dancefloor as it is in the mosh-pit.
“Nom Nom Nom feels like a is a lyrical continuation of our last album UK GRIM. Musically my bandmate Andrew Fearn started it on the keyboard, which Hot Chip built on before we finished up with an excellent chorus conjured up by their singer Alexis Taylor,” explains Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson. “Meanwhile, Cat Burglar is a weird Prog Rock meets B52s jam that explores the narrow corridors of modern human experience.”
Hot Chip add that the sessions represent the results of a truly a free and encouraging exchange of ideas and music between the two groups which meant both songs were written and recorded at Abbey Road in just a matter of hours.
“Making these songs over the course of one day at Abbey Road was a great experience,” the band explain. “We arrived without a plan but quickly began working together in a harmonious way, with lots of improvisation and very little ego. We are very grateful to Sleaford Mods for joining us and very proud of the result.”
Realising they had made something special together, Sleaford Mods decided the tracks would be perfect when Friendly Records approached the duo to take part in their project with War Child, providing Nom Nom Nom and Cat Burglar with the perfect home.
Continuing the collaborative alchemy, artist David Shrigley OBE agreed to create the single’s artwork.
“The cover art from the great David Shrigley is the cherry on the cake, as it perfectly represents the music and lyrics,” continues Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson. “All creativity aside, and most importantly we've donated the tunes to War Child. They're doing important work in a time where the world is in chaos and although we can't fix the chaos, we can do a bit to help.”
The Abbey Road Lock-In Session, which provided the springboard for the project, is the latest in an ongoing project, which not only brings together different talents within our rooms, but also offer fans a unique insight in to the creative process as each session is documented and filmed.
“Bringing Hot Chip and Sleaford Mods together for the first time saw the two bands use the studio as a creative playroom without boundaries. What an amazing day of creativity and collaboration,” says Abbey Road’s Head of Brand, Mark Robertson, of the session which follows on from the studio hosting the likes of Fontaines D.C., Porridge Radio, Hak Baker and Bernard Butler for similar collaborations.
“The resulting music is that rare thing – something truly unique that somehow blends the signatures of both bands while creating something new, vibrant and essential,” adds Robertson.
The resulting joint single is being released as part of Friendly Records ongoing series of seven-inches for War Child, which has seen them previously release the tracks from the likes of Portishead and Idles. Only 1000 copies of Nom Nom Nom/Cat Burglar will be pressed, 900 on yellow transparent vinyl which will be available for £20 via Bandcamp, and 100 special edition copies on red, that are being sold for £30 at the Friendly Records shop in Bristol.
“We’re so grateful to the ongoing support from Sleaford Mods and to Hot Chip for donating the fantastic tracks Nom Nom Nom and Cat Burglar and David Shrigley for the brilliant design,” said War Child of the single.
“The world is more dangerous than ever before to be a child affected by conflict and the continued generosity of the artists we work with enables us to get children safe, deliver the vital mental health first aid they need to help them deal with the trauma they’ve experienced and get them back in to education. This is the fourth seven-inch Tom, Scott and the incredible team at Friendly Records have put on for us and all proceeds go directly to War Child to help us make a difference for some of the most vulnerable children on the planet. We’re deeply thankful for the generosity of everyone involved and can’t wait for you to hear it.”
Friendly Records added: “We‘ve been working with War Child for a few years now and we are immensely proud of the shows we’ve put on with them, the recent run of seven-inch singles we’ve released and most of all the amount of money that’s been raised."
