Abbey Road Lock-In: Hak Baker X Karma Kid - Windrush Baby | Episode 5

18th April 2023

We are delighted to announce the latest release in our ongoing ‘Lock-In’ series with Hak Baker's highly evocative, new single Windrush Baby.

Recorded in The Gatehouse as part of a two-day session with producer Karma Kid, the track is one of four songs Hak wrote during a fast paced, spontaneous and collaborative session, assisted by Abbey Road engineer Gordon Davidson and senior runner Sarah Meyz.

Speaking about his Abbey Road session, Hak Baker says:

"There are no boxes or limits to work within when it comes to Sam (Karma Kid) and I making music together and that’s the most exciting thing about doing it. We only wanted to use equipment that we could get at Abbey Road - the mic we used for example sounds so crisp and amazing! There’s so much history attached to Abbey Road that I felt that I needed to come here. I want to have my picture on the wall one day."

Our ‘Lock-In’ series is designed to reveal the musical creative experience, offering a window into an otherwise closed process. Artists are invited into the studios for an unexpected collaboration, or to record a new interpretation of an existing song, using only the mix of vintage instruments and future tech provided by Abbey Road.

The Clockworks, Jane Weaver, Django Django x Denai Moore and Fontaines D.C have all released ‘Lock-In’ singles over the last two years.

Speaking about Hak Baker’s new release, Abbey Road’s Head of Brand & Communications, Mark Robertson says:

"Our Abbey Road ‘Lock-In’ format was designed to illuminate what happens in the studio and Hak Baker’s new film is a great addition to the series. Hak’s fantastic, powerful new single Windrush Baby was made during an intense and highly creative writing session with Karma Kid. The music and words just flowed, and Windrush Baby was an instant highlight, so we’re thrilled that the track is now out in the world!"

Hak Baker recently announced his highly-anticipated debut album, Worlds End FM, an extraordinary creative leap tailor-made for an era of social inequity, internet addiction and post-pandemic disillusionment, to be released on 9 June 2023 on Hak Attack Records/AWAL.

Worlds End FM is a debut album that introduces Hak Baker’s singular, mercurial folk-poetry. Hak has a series of high profile gigs this year, including a headline show at KOKO on 29 September and a run of dates in Germany, before supporting Pete Doherty at The Royal Albert Hall on 5 May and Jamie T at Finsbury Park on 29 June.
