Highlights of 2017: Gordon Davidson, Mirek Stiles, Matthew Cocker

15th January 2018
2017 was a phenomenal year in music;the sheer volume and quality of newreleases, remasters and film scores has been overwhelming. It fills us with pride to know that the amazing Abbey Road team played their part in making it all happen. Now as we stumbleblurry-eyed into 2018, we cant help but feel a tad reflective and look back on the year thats passed. So, we asked around Abbey Road Studios to find out the highlights of the year for our engineers and studio staff their favourite projects to work on, the favourite albums of the year, and of course, what they wanted to get for Christmas. Gordon Davidson, Senior Recordist. Highlight of 2017: Thomas Newman - Victoria and Abdul. Its always a pleasure when Tom comes to the Studios. Mixing Novelists Mixtape. Its Great! Computer Music Mixing Masterclass feature was fun. Favourite Album of 2017: LCD Soundsystem - American Dream or Queens of the Stone Age - Villains, cant decide... Favourite Christmas song: Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! - Dean Martin. All I want for Christmas is: Just one more pedal... Tip for 2018:Novelist and Boniface.

Mirek Stiles, Head of Audio Products Highlight of 2017: Releasing our first microphone with Chandler Limited - it really is a thing of beauty. Also talking at AES in New York about our experiments in recording music for Virtual Reality was pretty cool. Favourite Album of 2017: I love Anna of the Norths debut album, Lovers - Lush synth pop Scandinavian style. Favourite Christmas song: The Waitresses, Christmas Wrapping - ridiculously funky bass line, bouncy vocal and a fat warming brass section, what more could you want in a Christmas song? All I want for Christmas is: Snow and Hummus will suffice. Tip for 2018:Avante Black - Im curious as to what she will be releasing in 2018. Her song Make A Mess really hooked me this year, more like that please. I dont just listen to Scandinavian pop BTW. Im also really looking forward to Hybrids new album due in 2018, those guys always seem to push the envelope sonically and musically.

Matthew Cocker, Archiving and Transfer Engineer. Highlight of 2017: The Beatles (surprise!) Sergeant Pepper 50th Anniversary Reissue, plus I also enjoyed working on the Queen album, News of the World, for Queen Productions. Favourite album of 2017:The Beatles Sergeant Pepper 50th Anniversary Reissue, and in the classical category, Scriabins 2nd Symphony/Piano Concerto from the Oslo Philharmonic. Favourite Christmas Song: Too many to mention, but Baby Its Cold Outside is a good one, the carol O Come All Ye Faithful, plus I really love this carol-anthem by Herbert Howells, A Spotless Rose. All I Want for Christmas is: Happiness and health for all my family and friends. Tip for 2018: Fenne Lily will record the John Lewis Christmas advert song. (You heard it here first!).
