Golden Globe Nominations 2020

11th December 2019
Congratulations to all the 2020 Golden Globe nominees! We’re delighted to announce that many of the projects recorded, mixed and mastered at Abbey Road have been included within the nominations, most notably Thomas Newman's 1917 and Daniel Pemberton's Motherless Brooklyn, both up for Best Original Score, both recorded and mixed across the studios.

Discover the full list of projects worked on at Abbey Road that are up for nominations at January’s ceremony.

Best Original Score - Motherless Brooklyn & 1917

Motherless Brooklyn is the brand-new American neo-noir crime movie from award-winning actor Edward Norton. Scored by the prolific Daniel Pemberton, this is his second nomination in the category, as he was nominated four years ago for Steve Jobs.

The film’s score was composed by Pemberton, recorded in-part in Studio Three with Sam Okell and Christopher Parker, mixed in the Penthouse with Sam and Paul Pritchard and mastered by Christian Wright. Daniel is pictured below in Studio Three with Sam working on the film.

Marking Thomas Newman’s seventh collaboration with Sam Mendes, 1917 is a visceral World War I thriller, conceived as a one-take film, in which two young British privates embark on a mission deep into enemy territory, in hopes of communicating a message that could save 1,600 lives.

For the film’s composer, 1917 was an undeniable challenge - one that he was only able to figure out as he went through the scoring process. “Sam started feeding me images maybe in May, and I would just start writing ideas. They would circle back to him, he would have comments, and we kind of learned as we went. So, it was a lot of trial and error."

Newman brought the project to Abbey Road where the score was recorded in Studio One and the Gatehouse, mixed and edited in Studio Three and Front Room, with the Penthouse lounge used as another editing room. Engineered by Simon Rhodes, assisted by Gordon Davidson, Matt Jones and Daniel Hayden.

Knives Out

Knives Out is the suspenseful new murder-mystery film from award-winning director, Rian Johnson; a classic Cluedo-style whodunit with an all-star cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans and Curtis Lee Jamie.⁣ This year it's up for Best Film – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.

The film's score was composed by Rian's cousin Nathan Johnson and recorded in Studio One. Session engineered by John Barrett and assisted by Andy Maxwell.

"That’s also why I decided to record at Abbey Road – they’ve got a beautiful big scoring room, but the reverb tail isn’t insane so it can be lush, while also being very distinct and in your face."⁣

Jojo Rabbit

Scored in Studio Two by composer Michael Giacchino, Jojo Rabbit is a 2019 American satirical black comedy film written and directed by Taika Waititi, based on Christine Leunens' book Caging Skies. Engineered by Peter Cobbin, assisted by John Barrett and Freddie Light, the film is up for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy

Rocketman

The acclaimed soundtrack to the Elton John musical fantasy Rocketman is in the running in the same category of Best Picture - Musical or Comedy. Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture features the vocal performances of the film’s star Taron Egerton and producer-composer Giles Martin reinterpreting Elton’s landmark hits. Martin recorded the album between 2017 and 2019 at Abbey Road and AIR Studios.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Missing Link & The Lion King

And finally, three films nominated in Best Animated Feature category were all worked on at Abbey Road; How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Missing Link and The Lion King.

Back in October 2018, composer John Powell joined us in Studio One to record the score to How To Train Your Dragon The Hidden World. The beautifully-crafted soundtrack album was engineered by Nick Wollage, assisted by Abbey Road engineer Matt Jones and assistant engineer Daniel Hayden.

We were also honoured to work on the visually stunning remake of The Lion King, composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer. Donald Glover, who took on the role of Simba in the film, recorded his vocals whilst at Abbey Road working on Solo: A Star Wars Story: "I requested not to be [in the same room as Beyoncé]," he said. "I did not wanna be looking into Beyonce's eyes while doing this. But actually, I was working on Solo at the time so I was in London, so I recorded at Abbey Road Studios."

Composed by Carter Burwell, Missing Link, the American stop-motion animated adventure film, completes the trio of Abbey Road related projects up for Best Animated Feature. Recorded in Studio Two and engineered by Simon Rhodes, assisted by Paul Pritchard.
