BRIT Awards 2019 Nominations

14th January 2019
The 2019 BRIT Awards nominations were officially announced on Saturday and we are exceptionally proud to have a played a small part in the journey of a myriad of the nominated acts. Read a full round-up of the nominations below.

We begin with a massive congratulations to Nile Rodgers & CHIC who have been nominated for Best International Group. Following his appointment as our first ever Chief Creative Advisor, Nile has made Abbey Road his UK creative home. His immediate focus was to complete the first new CHIC album in 26 years. It’s About Time was released in September last year, which was a top 10 album recorded between Studio Three, Front Room and Gatehouse studios and mastered by Miles Showell.

Sober, Nile Rodgers' first music video from his new album, was filmed in Studio Two at Abbey Road, featuring Stefflon Don and Craig David who has been nominated for British Male.

In the same category as Nile Rodgers & CHIC, we see Abbey Road favourites Brockhampton gain an incredibly well-deserved nomination. 2018 was a pivotal year for Brockhampton, amassing five star reviews for both their live shows and fourth album Iridescence, created in Studio Three over three weeks and mixed in The Penthouse. The album was acclaimed for its honesty and 'impeccable production' by Forbes, while Evening Standard described Brockhampton as the 'hip-hop crew redefining what it means to be a boy band'. We couldn’t be more delighted for the self-proclaimed ‘hardest working boyband in show business’.

Up for the biggest award of the night, Mastercard British Album of the Year are guitar-pop outfit The 1975. The band’s third album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, received four and five star reviews across the board, being described by Pitchfork as 'outrageous and electric', by NME as ‘the millennial answer to OK Computer’ and by the Washington Post as ‘proof they can do it all’. The band, who are also nominated for Best Group, came to Abbey Road to record an orchestra in Studio Two for the new record. Sessions were engineered by Chris Bolster, assisted by Toby Hulbert & Daniel Hayden, moving to Studio Three to record the London Community Gospel Choir, again engineered by Chris Bolster, assisted by Daniel Hayden.

Dua Lipa leads the field at the 2019 BRIT Awards, with four nominations which includes two nominations in the British Single category for One Kiss, featuring Calvin Harris, and IDGAF. Dua Lipa was a recent visitor to our Gatehouse studio, and back in 2017 she performed live versions for both Blow Your Mind and Be The One in Studio One as part of the BRITs Critics’ Choice.

George Ezra, whose sophomore album Staying at Tamara’s was the second-biggest selling of 2018, has three nominations, British Male, British Single for Shotgun, and again British Album of the Year. Ezra’s distinctly rich vocals and cross-generational appeal makes him a strong contender for the night. Last year, Ezra came to Abbey Road to record an intimate five-song set which included material off his new record.

“We thought it would be a lovely thing to do where we rehearsed them up, recorded them - the arrangement is a bit stripped down, but we actually play as a band,” said Ezra. “This isn’t how they exist on the record, but it’s lovely to have stripped down versions.”

In the category of British Female we see nominations for Florence + the Machine (another Best Album nominee) and Jess Glynne. The latest single Patricia from Florence’s acclaimed fourth studio album High As Hope, pays homage to the godmother of punk, Patti Smith. The vocals for the track were recorded in Studio Three last year.

Jess Glynne, who in 2018 became the British woman with the most chart-topping singles in the UK, picked up another nomination for her No. 1 single I’ll Be There. She also appears on These Days by dance group Rudimental, which is nominated for British Music Video. Rudimental and Jess Glynne paid a visit to Abbey Road to film and record a live version of the song in Studio One.

In the same category, Rita Ora's Let You Love Me has also been nominated. Mastered by our own Alex Gordon, the single has been soaring the charts and breaking records, being Ora’s most successful opening weekend release to date.

We also send our congratulations to the BRITs Critics' Choice Award winner Sam Fender and shortlisted artists Mahalia and Lewis Capaldi. In honour of their nominations we welcomed them into Studio Three to perform intimate sessions - watch each one below.

Previous winners of the award include Adele, Sam Smith, Florence + The Machine, Rag’n’Bone Man and Jorja Smith, who have all gone to achieve worldwide success. We’re excited to see what Sam, Mahalia and Lewis achieve in 2019.
