2021 Rewind with Andrew Dudman, Marta Di Nozzi and Geoff Pesche

2021 Rewind with Andrew Dudman, Marta Di Nozzi and Geoff Pesche

21st December 2021

As 2021 comes to a close, we asked the Abbey Road team to look back and reflect on what has been a particularly poignant year for the studios.

From their favourite projects to work on, most played albums and their tips for which artists will be burgeoning in 2022 — find out more about Abbey Road's Andrew Dudman, Marta Di Nozzi and Geoff Pesche in part of our 2021 Rewind series.

Favourite project you’ve worked on at Abbey Road this year and why?

Andrew Dudman:

So…too many projects to have one particular favourite, but it was great recording and doing the Atmos mix for Gary Barlow's Christmas album and recording brass for Richard Jacques Guardians of the Galaxy game soundtrack where there was also a family connection as completely separately, my sister contracted the strings and played violin on the score up in Manchester.

Marta Di Nozzi

This is a difficult one because there have been so many good projects this year!
I would say the soundtrack for Marvel's movie Eternals, with an amazing score written by composer Ramin Djwadi is definitely one of my favourites.
Another amazing one is the soundtrack for the new Guardians Of The Galaxy video game, I cannot possibly forget the amount of brass we recorded for this project, it sounds massive!

Geoff Pesche:

Mica Millar album, pronounced Meeka. Wonderful blue-eyed soul voice, great songs. Have a listen.

Your favourite album of 2021?

Andrew Dudman:

Can’t remember the last album I’ve got to listen to that wasn’t work related or kid related! Moana and Trolls soundtracks are top of the list in our house.  I’m particularly proud of the album I recorded, mixed and produced for Christian Svarfvar and Johan Ullen with their reworking of Bach Violin Concertos. This was recorded just before and finished during Lockdown one, and finally had a release this November.

Marta Di Nozzi:

I have two:
Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz. I was waiting for this album to come out because I knew that the orchestral parts were recorded at Abbey Road. It is a very interesting sound I recommend listening.
The second one is the soundtrack for Dickinson Season Two written by the genius of Drum and Lace, can't get enough of this project and of the very curated electronic landscapes.

Geoff Pesche:

Les Sabler Tranquility. Proper smooth jazz, or lift music according to my sister.

Which new artist / band are you most excited about for 2022 and why?

Andrew Dudman:

It was great working with Aime Doherty this year on her Spirit Untamed film score.  She was the first female composer that Dreamworks had hired for one of their scores, and she’ll have loads of success going forward. (She’s also recorded a number of albums for Audio Network over the years so I’m sure they’d claim to have discovered her!

Marta Di Nozzi:

Might not be exactly a NEW artist but am waiting for Motomami, the new album by Rosalía.
I was, and still I am, so in love with El Mal Querer that I can't wait to hear her new music, I am wondering if it is going to be inspiring as the last one. At least, I hope so!

Geoff Pesche:

Mica Millar for the reasons above. Should make a record in Studio One with tons of strings on it. Watch out for this one. I said the same about Adele when I did Chasing Pavements up here!
