The Clockworks Reveal Lost In The Moment - A New Live Song & Film For Christmas Day

25th December 2022
Abbey Road Studios is delighted to announce the latest release in its ongoing Abbey Road Lock-In series with The Clockworks’ new Christmas Day track, Lost In The Moment. A spur of the moment live recording at the end of the band’s ‘Lock-In’ session, Lost In The Moment is an emotive performance from the band’s singer James McGregor, alongside Tom Freeman, who plays the studio’s Yamaha CFX concert grand piano. The track was mixed and recorded by Abbey Road engineer Matt Jones and assisted by senior runner Freddie Light.

Speaking about the making of Lost In The Moment, The Clockworks’ singer James McGregor says: “Lost In The Moment was initially written on piano but was always imagined as a full band production. We were in Abbey Road recording another song and I sat at the grand piano in Studio Three and played this for the band. Over the following weeks we started work on a band version of the song. When we returned to Abbey Road at the tail end of the night someone had the idea to set up the piano and a microphone and do a raw live recording to capture the essence of the track.

This song was initially three different tracks. I realised that thematically it felt like the three songs were trying to get at something similar and even the chord sequences for both were strangely close. I put the songs together and it felt like it made sense. I like the irony of sincerely trying to make a moment out of questioning if we’ve lost the ability to make moments. I often find that the more painful the lyrics tend to be, the more playful they can be too. It’s as if one allows the other. I think that influence comes from shows like Fleabag or The Office where the funnier they are, the more it hurts when they become sad.”

Abbey Road’s ‘Lock-In’ series is designed to clarify the musical creative experience, offering a window into an otherwise closed process. Artists are invited into the studios for an unexpected collaboration, or to record a new interpretation of an existing song, using only the mix of vintage instruments and future tech provided by Abbey Road. Jane Weaver, Django Django x Denai Moore and Fontaines D.C. have all released ‘Lock-In’ singles over the last two years.

Speaking about The Clockworks’ new release, Abbey Road’s Head of Brand & Communications, Mark Robertson says: “Our Abbey Road ‘Lock-In’ series was designed to illuminate what happens in the studio and that couldn’t be more true of this film, which captures a spontaneous, unrehearsed moment of raw honesty. After a long day in Studio Three, The Clockworks decided to abandon their guitars and use just the grand piano, improvising an arrangement of a song that they are yet to record. Magic!”

The Clockworks have had a relentless 2022 which has seen them release a string of brilliant singles; tour with Pixies, Inhaler and The Reytons; play festivals in the UK, Europe and America and sell out headline shows across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. The band, who recently released the excellent single Blood On The Mind are now in the studio beginning work on their debut album.
