Tenderlonious - The Shakedown, Recorded and Mixed at Abbey Road

25th June 2018
London's jazz resurgence has seen many key figures gain widespread attention, and it's something we've been championing at Abbey Road. Already strong supporters of London jazz outfit Ezra Collective, who have recently recorded their acclaimed album Juan Pablo: The Philosopher at the studios. It is now time to introduce another rising star from the UK jazz scene, coming in the form of Ed 'Tenderlonious' Cawthorne and his debut LP, The Shakedown.

Featuring a stellar line-up of musicians who are known as 22archestra, Tenderlonious was invited to record at Abbey Road with our own Matt Mysko engineering and mixing the album. With credit to their talent and musicianship, the album was recorded during a single eight-hour session in Studio Three.

The group includes former Yussef Kamaal member Yussef Dayes on drums, Ruby Rushton bassist Fergus Ireland and producers Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Jeen Bassa on percussion. The record exposes the full depth of Cawthorne's technical and compositional skills, ranging from free-flowing jazz, hip-hop to Latin. Smooth bass licks and pitch-bent synthesisers on 'Yussef's Groove' resemble that of Roy Ayers funk, with a homage to J-Dilla and Slum Village on the heavily soaked hip-hop track 'SV Disco'. Listen below to the title track, The Shakedown. This is a deep, modern jazz record with a nod to the likes of Sun Ra and Fela Kuti that rightly gives Tenderlonious his platform to shine in the UKs radically defining jazz resurgence. Listen on Spotify. Buy the album here.
