Record Store Day 2021 Releases from Abbey Road Studios

12th June 2021

The annual Record Store Day 2021 is taking place on Saturday 12 June (today) and Saturday 17 July this year, so it's time we showed you the exciting list of records our engineers have cut here at Abbey Road; from Fontaines D.C and The Who to Amy Winehouse and Freddie Mercury, we've got a lot for you to choose from.

Drop One - Saturday 12 June

In drop one, we begin with the legendary Amy Winehouse and Remixes. Originally released as part of an Amy Winehouse box set, this compilation is getting a standalone release on coloured vinyl. It includes a Jay-Z remix of Rehab, a film noir take on Back To Black by the Rumble Strips, and a reworking of You Know I'm No Good featuring Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah. All cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.

Next up we have Elton John's Regimental Sgt Zippo, which has been mastered and cut-to-vinyl by our own Sean Magee. Recorded at Dick James Studios in Central London between late 1967 and spring 1968, this was slated to be Elton John's debut album before he had second thoughts and scrapped the lot. Six of the songs, including the psychedelic title track, were released on the box set Jewels last year, which was also cut by Sean Magee at Abbey Road, but this is the first time the entire album has been made available.

Friends of the studio, post-punk Dubliners Fontaines D.C., have announced that for Record Store Day they will be releasing a brand new live album, Live At Kilmainham Gaol. Mastered and cut by Abbey Road's Christian Wright, the new album is taken from their Other Voices session last July at the historic Dublin landmark and features tracks from their last LP and debut Dogrel. Pressed on 180g heavyweight black vinyl with gatefold, the back cover will also feature an essay penned by Dublin historian Donal Fallon.

Drop Two - Saturday 17 July

You'll have to wait another month until the next drop, but fret not, it's definitely worth the wait. In July we begin proceedings with The Cranberries. 30 years after their debut release, UMC is proud to issue for the first time on vinyl a special transparent edition of the band’s greatest hits collection Stars: The Best of 1992–2002, which has been cut-to-vinyl by our own Geoff Pesche. The Cranberries' Fergal Lawler explained: “We are very honoured that Universal have chosen Stars as a special vinyl release for Record Store Day. The proceeds from sales are going to the War Child foundation, a charity that do incredible work to help vulnerable children in war-torn countries.”

To celebrate the year that would have been Freddie Mercury’s 75th Birthday, USM / Mercury Records will be releasing a Record Store Day exclusive 7" single of Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow on pink vinyl cut at Abbey Road. Originally released in 1985 as the fourth and final single from his debut solo album Mr. Bad Guy, it was written by Mercury, and produced by Reinhold Mack and Mercury.

For fans of Talking Heads, Television and ESG - listen up! The Bristol experimental band Squid will be recording two new songs onto a two-track EP, live and direct to vinyl. Arthur from Squid, said ahead of the recordings “We’ve been busying ourselves away on some scores, arranging orchestral versions of two of our favourite tracks from Bright Green Field. The process is the same as ever, starting off with no clue of what we’re doing, stumbling along together, each inputting our ideas into the music until it starts to take shape. We're so excited and also quite terrified to release this little gem for Record Store Day 2021.” Once recorded, these live tracks will be cut to vinyl by Abbey Road's Christian Wright which you will be able to get a copy on 12” vinyl exclusively on 17 July.
