Nick Mason announces tour with new band ‘Saucerful of Secrets’

25th May 2018
Fifty years ago, a group of musicians set about disrupting the London music scene with an experimental, psychedelic sound entirely unheard of at the time; prone to long instrumental excursions, unusual lyrics and bizarre light shows that flooded the venues of the underground circuit they frequented, Pink Floyd were something utterly different - and as a result often found themselves rejected by the mainstream. But despite the limitations of their avant-garde approach to contemporary music, Pink Floyd signed a deal with EMI in 1967, and later entered Abbey Road Studios to record Piper at the Gates of Dawn a monumental, kaleidoscopic effort that re-wrote the rules on pop music and began one of the most significant discographies in music history.

Now, just over 50 years since this inceptive moment, founding member of Pink Floyd, Nick Mason is returning to the live circuit with an all-star line-up of sensational musicians in the form of new band, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets to perform the earlier works of Pink Floyd to live audiences once again.

Back this week in the claustrophobic London clubs that Pink Floyd started out in, Nick Mason is placing a real focus on music from the Barrett-era of the discography, breathing new life and energy into the songs in a well-deserved homage to a formative time in the band's canon - a series of releases that still to this day possess an unrivalled inventiveness and charm.

Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets is comprised of Mason on drums, regular Pink Floyd session player Guy Pratt on bass, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet on guitar and vocals, alongside guitarist Lee Harris and keyboard player Dom Beken.

The band has already played a packed out show at London's Dingwalls and a run of dates at the Half Moon, also in London, with both The Times and The FT describing the performance as a joy. The band has now announced a month-long European tour throughout September 2018. Of the new project, Mason said: "Were not a tribute band. It's not important to play the songs exactly as they were, but to capture the spirit. I hope different elements will appeal to different people. Something like our version of 'Bike' is one of the more difficult things we've tackled. And then there are things like 'Set the Controls for The Heart of The Sun', just because it's one of my favourite things to play. Buy tickets and see all tour dates. Read more.
