Limited Edition Yesterday Score by Sir George Martin for The Beatles

Limited Edition Yesterday Score by Sir George Martin for The Beatles

12th June 2017

Abbey Road Studios was proud to collaborate with Sir George Martin on this limited edition print of his original handwritten title and first page orchestral score for Yesterday. This limited edition replica score comes from the Sir George Martin Collection and it features a hand numbered certificate of authentication with printed signature.

Presented in a handmade ribbon bound portfolio and numbered 1 to 500, Yesterday is the first track ever by The Beatles to feature a string quartet and a major radio hit at the time, its distinctive string arrangement by George Martin was recorded in Studio Two on June 14th 1965. Featuring Sir Paul McCartney on his Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar, accompanied by an understated but eloquent string section, Yesterday was a very important song for The Beatles, as well as the first time that they recorded with musicians from outside the group, paving the way for later sonic experimentation.

The limited edition score is a working document complete with scribbles and pencil notations, as well as the occasional tea stain and a humorous signature “By Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Martin Esq. and Mozart.” Produced in the UK, these two prints are made to museum-quality specification on Somerset Enhanced 100% cotton rag paper with hand-finished edges.

George Martin is recognised globally as one of music’s most creative talents. In 1962 he met and signed The Beatles and as their producer, developed a partnership that revolutionised the art of studio recording. He additionally scored a number of feature films including the ground-breaking “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Yellow Submarine” and “Live and Let Die”. Considered by many as the greatest music producer of all time, with a record-breaking 30 Number 1 hit singles, George has been awarded two Ivor Novellos and six Grammys. Sir George’s son Giles Martin says of the collection, “Dad had such a deep artistic talent. He was tremendously proud of his studio work with the Beatles and his hand-written scores illuminate that intensely creative time together. He was delighted that his arrangements would not only be preserved, but be available to those who loved music as passionately as he did.”
