American Gangster launches in top movie spot in the U.S and Canada featuring music recorded and mixed by Abbey Road's Peter Cobbin

We were delighted to learn that the release of the film "American Gangster" directed by Ridley Scott, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe opened as the top movie in the U.S. and Canada. It was the highest-ever grossing gangster film taking in $46.3 million for Universal Pictures.
The film, a $100 million project, took producer Brian Grazer seven years to bring to the big screen. It stars Washington as a Harlem drug lord and Crowe as the honest cop who brings him down.
The film sets a number of records including personal bests for Washington and Crowe, surpassing their previous respective efforts in "Inside Man" ($29 million) and "Gladiator" ($35 million).
Recorded and mixed on location in LA by Abbey Roads Peter Cobbin, the soundtrack was composed by Marc Streitenfeld and intercut with the great music that was the reality of Frank Lucas' world. Grazer said of the music "I wanted to introduce a visual and sonic world that is a contained entity of the '70's" Kathy Nelson, the film's music supervisor explains that "this was one of the richest eras of music. Harlem was as much about the music as it was about drugs and whatever else was going on."
Music of the soundtrack offers an album of funk, R&B, classic blues, soul and hip-hop with tracks from blues originator John Lee Hooker, guitar legend Bobby Womack, rhythm, country and blues greats such as The Staple Singers and gritty, ill-fated soul duo Sam & Dave.
