Recordist

Following a Tonmeister degree in music and sound recording and a placement year at Phoenix Sound in Pinewood Studios, Toby freelanced as an engineer, a sound editor at Shepperton Film Studios and a film composer's assistant. He worked on many sessions at some of the top London studios including Air, Strongroom, Urchin, Miloco and Phoenix Sound before joining us as an assistant in early 2012.

He’s continued to build his reputation as a versatile and popular engineer, having worked with talented artists such as Oh Wonder, Frank Ocean, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Alabama Shakes, Kasabian & Jack Garratt. He has engineered for producers including Tony Visconti, Alan Parsons, Dave Cobb, Malay and Om’Mas Keith.

Although his skills were developed in the digital era, Toby has picked up many analogue techniques from working with top producers and engineers at Abbey Road. He’s keen to use a hybrid approach, combining the speed and convenience of digital software with the character of analogue equipment. Toby brings great enthusiasm for music and experimentation to his sessions and aims to create a relaxed atmosphere where artists can be creative.

Toby’s also gained great experience in soundtrack recording and production, working as score recordist on titles such as the Oscar winning Gravity, The Imitation Game, Suffragette (on which he was also score editor), and The Avengers. During the summer of 2015 he enjoyed a month working as digital scoring engineer for Ridley Scott's The Martian, as well as engineering solo sessions for Hacksaw Ridge. He’s recently recorded and mixed scores for Natalie Holt including the Royal Television Society nominated score for BBC’s hard-hitting drama Three Girls, BBC’s The Boy with the Topknot and the feature film Journey’s End.

Recent notable projects include a 5.1 mix of a live concert for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, recording for pop-duo Oh Wonder (strings on their self-titled debut album and live sessions at The Pool and in The Gatehouse at Abbey Road), the score for the Aardman film Early Man, and recording sessions with Allan Rayman, Rews, Daniel Elms for his Islandia album and Yann Tiersen for Eusa.
