Eight Days a Week at Abbey Road

Last week saw the cinema release of a milestone new Ron Howard documentary about The Beatles on tour in the early 1960s, Eight Days a Week: The Touring Years which has been receiving lots of attention.

The audio for the release was masterminded by Giles Martin, son of Sir George Martin, from his studio space in Abbey Road where he prepared audio for the film using the original Hollywood Bowl live tapes.

Using a technique developed by Abbey Road’s James Clarke, Giles was able to separate the band’s live sound from the screams of their audience for the first time ever.

It’s so raw and there are mistakes but it wasn’t like today where people play live with Pro Tools rigs,” said Giles speaking to The Sun last week, “Even though they couldn’t hear themselves, they sang in tune and played in time…The Beatles were at their peak live in ’64 and ’65.

The film is in cinemas now. To read more about Giles Martin’s work on the project alongside quotes from Paul McCartney and John Lennon have a read of his recent interviews with The Sun and Clash Magazine.
